This piece was handwoven on a pedal loom by Don Juan Camacho. The final touches—clasps, lining, and handles—were made with needle and thread by Doña Sonia Navarro.

Made of natural cabuya grown in the El Guarco area, Cartago, Costa Rica.

The cabuya plant takes five years to complete its growth process, allowing its leaves to be harvested and its fiber extracted. Hand-spinning the fibers to create the rope, dyeing, braiding, weaving, and sewing are all part of the laborious and delicate processes involved in each piece.

The tradition of handmade cabuya in Costa Rica has disappeared over time, being replaced by synthetic cabuya, thread or fabric scraps.

Since 2011, Don Juan and Doña Sonia have been working together to keep alive the heritage and cultural tradition of artisanal cabuya, a traditional product of the area since 1900. It has been used in Costa Rica since that time for medicinal purposes and the creation of handicrafts.
